Chaffee County is a ranching and tourist community located at the base of the Collegiate Peaks and includes towns such as Buena Vista, Westcliffe and Silvercliffe.
Forest, national or public land makes up 85% of the county’s land area. Artists find the beauty of the area appealing and the artist community has steadily increased.
Summer and winter recreation business has also helped to improve the economy and increased the population in the County.
Monarch Ski Areas is the focal point for winter recreation. Rafting, hiking, vacation homes and tourists are some of the summer recreation opportunities. Salida is the largest community in Chaffee County with a Super Wal-Mart.
Buena Vista is the second largest town in the county located to the North.
This community has a large population of families who work for the Department of Corrections.
Wal-Mart and the correctional facility have increased the employment level in Chaffee County and are the largest employers.
Rafting, hiking, and tourists have added to the economy by providing seasonal jobs. Smaller outlying communities are also part of Chaffee County; these include Poncha Springs, Nathrop, Garfield, Centerville and Maysville. With the continuing growth in Chaffee County construction has also become another major employer.
Chaffee County is in the middle of the mountains and has the only central hospital. This has provided assistance to many other communities outside our county.
